This poem keeps coming to mind lately. It was published in the "stuff you wrote" section of Sassy magazine and I still have it memorized after all these years. Here goes:
i tried to climb the stairs but i couldn't
something was holding me back, and i lost the battle
they say the grass is always greener on the other side
but grass is grass
and green is green
and i like the color that i live with
so i cried as i climbed the stairs
and i cried as i went down the stairs
and i cried when the grass changed colors
I apologize for not knowing who the author is.
Whoa.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great description of teen depression.
I agree.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me think mostly of life and changes and being immature and unable to cope with the changes. Or at least wanting to stay young but needing space, all those teen things.
Oh, on a reread.....I see that!
ReplyDeleteChanging grass.....maybe from young green to brown....
Climbling stairs, progression.....
It's a lovely poem, deep.....deeper than it appears.
Wonder what did become of the author?
I was thinking about this in the shower this morning, and I decided to just say that. I love the way your blog makes me think about things and sticks with me when I'm doing something else.
ReplyDeleteThat last comment was from me. I guess I was signed in as Chris. It's like we're one person....
ReplyDeleteLast night we were looking at your wedding photos on flickr. Chris really liked your hair thing (I'm at a loss for what you would call it).
