Food Memory :: Daddy's Special

Not too long ago I posted about food memories. Well here is another memory from my childhood. My Dad would serve a hot breakfast of "Daddy's Special." June isn't allowed sugar yet, but some day I will definitely bust this sugary treat out for her. Here is how you make it:

Melt maybe three tablespoons of butter in a frying pan. Toss in some brown sugar, perhaps 1/4 cup. Once the sugar dissolves in the butter, you add the substance. Here you get your choice of either (1) old-fashioned rolled oats or (2) those big blocks of shredded wheat, crumbled up. I can't tell you how much to add, but I'd guess a cup and a half of oats and two or three of those blocks of shredded wheat. Enough so that all of it is coated with the buttery sugar. Then you fry away until hot and kinda crispy. Serve with a little bit of milk poured on top.

I think I would also add some sliced banana. That sounds good.

If anybody actually makes this let me know okay?

  1. Hay, my dad used to make that too! Only on nice days, though, when he could send us outside to play when the sugar buzz hit!

  5. Hah! My mom was a travel agent for years and got to go on a lot of "FAM" trips (i.e. no spouses, no kids, only travel agents and lots of booze). Anyway, she was out of town a lot. To make up for his poor dinner cooking skills my dad would often make something similar to yours, although with apples. That is, melt a heart-stopping wad of butter in a pan, add sliced apple chips to it, then dump on a bunch of sugar and cinnamon. Caramelize apples to a state of complete non-nutrition, then consume and rush your child to the nearest playground before she destroys the house.

    Or let her destroy the house so your wife doesn't ditch you again. :-)

    Welcome home Amy!

  7. Ooh, that sounds yummy! I'm sure Teagan would be all over that! She's got a sweet tooth the size of Montana. I also wanted to divulge my top secret blogging location: I was at work...I just didn't want to say I was blogging at work in case some day someone I work with sees it. Of course, I suppose you could figure it out by the time of day...oh well!

I always, always, always love comments. (Okay, except maybe not the nasty ones.)
