Britt and the Bees

A few years ago my sister started beekeeping.  I can't get over how brave she is to do so.  Despite my post about saving honeybees (check it out here), I have always been terribly afraid of them.

Here is a peek at her honey harvesting process.  There are beautiful jars of honey at the end of this...

Britt at work.  Isn't she cute?  I love the overalls.
Scraping the panels of the hive into a bin to separate the honey.

According to Britt, here's how it works:  You make a spatula warm and scrape it off.  Then the honey and wax are together.  Wax is much lighter.  I rigged up a way to separate.  It's on the cheap.

The separation system.

The honey.

The wax.

Voila!  Lovelieness.

  1. Nice photos, Amy! I love how your sister created a nifty system to separate the wax and the honey. Joe and his dad have been beekeeping forever and I try to tag along with them whenever they go to visit the hives. Isn't it a luxury to have local honey available? Your sister's is nice and dark. Looks yummy.

  2. Such a luxury. It's so nice to be able to suck on the wax too - that was an experience only last year. The way the honey melts in your mouth and then you spit out the wax. My daughter just loved it and would play with it. It's the best.

I always, always, always love comments. (Okay, except maybe not the nasty ones.)
